Mark Gatiss has revealed that his father Maurice has sadly passed away aged 89.
The Sherlock star, 54, took to Twitter on Sunday to confirm the heartbreaking news, saying his father had been ‘just shy’ of his 90th birthday.
Mark shared a series of photos of Maurice as he thanked NHS staff at Bishop Auckland Hospital for caring for his dad.

He wrote: ‘My dear old Dad passed away this morning just shy of his 90th birthday. Maurice was a wonderful man and a real character right to the end.
‘Huge thanks to the brilliant staff on Ward 16 of #NHS Bishop Auckland Hospital for all their kindnesses. Go well, my beloved father.’
Among the photos was one taken on Maurice’s wedding day to Mark’s mother Winnifred along with another taken in more recent times.
The actor was inundated with well wishes from his followers including Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall who wrote: ‘RIPx You look so like him’.

Mark’s father was an engineer and had been married to Winnifred until her death in 2003.
Mark rose to fame as a member of the comedy troupe The League of Gentlemen alongside Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson.
He co-created and starred in Sherlock as Sherlock Holmes’ brother Mycroft while he has also written nine episodes of Doctor Who.
The actor also starred as Tycho Nestoris in Game of Thrones and he is slated to appear in Mission: Impossible 7 opposite Tom Cruise.
