Avatar: The Way of Water celebrated its opening weekend, and it’s performing very well so far.
James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to Avatar brought in $134 million in North America for its box office debut, as well as $301 million overseas, making its opening tally $435 million.

That’s the third-biggest global opening weekend in the pandemic era, following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($442 million globally) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600 million globally).
It now has the fifth-biggest opening of the year. It was projected to open slightly higher, to $150 million to $175 million, via Deadline.
The movie cost $350 million to produce. James Cameron says the film needs to become one of the top-grossing releases in history to break even.
